Safari through Africa

Discover without limits

We are a photographing couple and in love with the nature. We‘re travelling looking for impressive, breathtaking places, where the world appears to stand still for a moment… We’re looking for nature, the extremer all the better. That’s why we wanted PRO TREK for this safari as companion for adventures.

Safari through Africa

Before embarking on our new journey through Africa, we knew that we were guaranteed an adventure. The savannas, amazing wild animals, dirt and stone tracks to remote areas and Maasai tribes made this trip an amazing adventure.

For several weeks, we drove a 4x4 around some amazing places in Kenya and Tanzania. Incredible reserves such as Masaai Mara, Lake Nakuru National Park, the impressive Hell's Gate Gorge, Tarangire National Park and the unusual and breathtaking Lake Natron, together with the turquoise and crystal-clear waters of Zanzibar Island, were some of the places that we immortalised with our cameras.

Something new and special accompanied us on this great adventure — two new travel companions. Two watches, the PRO TREK PRG-600-1ER and the PRG-600YB-3ER, travelled with us to the most remote area on the African continent, and made each and every day of our adventure much easier.

The barometer helped us recognise weather trends in advance. While it may not seem like it, it does rain in Africa and during the first week it rained almost every day. With the water, many roads become impassable and it's good to get out of there as soon as possible.

With its Tough Solar power system, we were never left in the lurch on our adventures; many things could go wrong, but not the watch.

One very important consideration in certain parts of Africa when travelling alone is directions. On many occasions we had to resort to the compass on the watch. In countries with hardly any signs or directions, and where it's virtually impossible to ask anyone for directions, there's not a lot to help you with directions, and often the GPS wasn't enough so we had to resort to map and compass, which won't let you down.

The five daily alarms enabled us to organize the day perfectly, from getting up before dawn to take photos, to closing times for leaving the national parks, sunset times, camping times and so on.

But if one place stood out on this great journey, it was Lake Natron in Tanzania. It is without a doubt one of the most remote areas we have visited, and getting there meant traversing over 120 km (75 miles) of unsurfaced track, without mobile coverage, which can only be reached in a 4x4. The "road" runs along the Rift Valley, passing Maasai territories with small villages and large mountains along the route. Zebras, giraffes and ostriches...

...can be seen while travelling around the territory. But the main protagonist for the majority of the journey is the imposing and sacred volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai. With an altitude of almost 3000 metres (almost 9900 feet) above sea level, it is the only volcano in the world that emits sodium-carbonatite lava, rich in sodium carbonate, which has a very low viscosity and temperature, and flows like a river of mud at temperatures of between 500 and 590°C. It was in this area that we tested and checked the altimeter of the PRO TREKs, and it was surprising to see the pace at which we went up.
The reason for our route toward Lake Natron, apart from to explore this remote and unusual area, was to try and observe and photograph the millions of pink flamingos that nest along its coasts during the dry season in search of the cyanobacteria present in its waters, which serve as their food. Being a volcanic area, the temperature rose considerably and our watches recorded temperatures of up to 45–46°C. These PRO TREK models, which can indicate temperatures of up to 60°C, were perfectly suited to our needs in these unusual and remote areas of Africa.

Without a doubt, these PRO TREK watch models are the best companions for our adventures. We like to have control over certain important aspects on our travels, and they provided this perfectly.
